I was happy to see some good new research from our friends at TDWI on the growth of EII. All of us out here in the field could feel it happening, we just couldn't quantify it. Which is what Colin White has done.
It's especially good to see the relative rate of growth of EII compared to other, more mature integration technologies (read ETL and EAI). These days, when most pundits are taking the safe route and predicting market consolidatation, it's nice to see empirical evidence that shows the projected growth of EII looking like a steep hill versus the plateau the older technologies have reached.
EII is growing - and fast. To invoke an often misquoted quote from Mark Twain, The rumors of EII's death have been greatly exaggerated.
Here's a nice chart that summarizes the growth:
Today, the percentage of people who rate their EII use as "High" is 5%. In two years, that will jump to 22%. That's a more than 4x jump in two years. And this is primarily a BI/DW crowd. Factor in SOA deployments for EII and the increase could be even greater.
There's quite a bit more in there on use patterns, etc., that I won't get into at the moment.
I highly recomment the report to anyone serious about data integration. TDWI has both the full report and Colin's Webcast available on their site.
Also, we're doing some research of our own at Ipedo. We just launched our 2nd Annual EII Survey. We're looking for input. If you're interested, you can find details here.
